Thu Feb 3 19:11:47 MST 2005 joana diamos called about matters that might be addressed in newsletter: traffic problems: 1. speeding problem: walkers, esp. early morning, esp. older, experience danger from speeders; some residents have been hit (I believe). many speeders appear to be non-residents: household help contract workers (painters, etc.) solution in newsletter, ask neighbors to be aware of problem and to alert their employees, both long-term and contract, to the need to drive slowly and carefully. benefits for walkers, obvious; for neighbors advising workers: warm feeling from respecting and helping their neighbors; even warmer feeling from decreasing probability of a "deep pockets" attack from person injured by speeding worker. 2. stop signs there are no 4-way stop signs in eee; vehicles on the outer circle (and inner cirle?) have right of way (no stop signs constrain circle driving). problem: drivers on streets intersecting circle are controlled by stop signs; but these drivers appear sometimes (often) to not realize that circle drivers always have the right of way. solution: explain this obvious point to neighbors: new residents may not be aware of problem (may not have nearly collided with vehicle entering circle from side street). suggest that defensive driving on the circle requires that a driver assume all intersections are 4-way stops, if any other vehicle is in sight: a car driving on circle will often cut in front of another vehicle driving in opposite direction when exiting on a side street.
