of this image hierarchy and is described there.  File names and identifiers
used below refer to this database.


Two sets of scans were done for the 59 photos sent by Barbara
Bond Jagy: 

	1. gang scans 001.jpg-009_5r.jpg (9 scans, 50 photos);
	2. gang scans 01.tif-04.tif (4 scans, 28 photos)

The two sets of scans were worked upon as described following.
Note that the scan identifier is the second element of the filename.

Nine photos, mostly about 2x3 in., were gang-scanned in grayscale
at 600 ppi into tiff files.  The gang scans were separated into
individual photo images, which were saved as Photoshop format psd
files, in directory "./splits-orig". The individual images were
adjusted for contrast and sharpened, and saved
as psd files, in "./splits-1".

19 photos, mostly about 2x3 in., were gang-scanned in grayscale
at 1200 ppi into tiff files.  The gang scans were separated into
individual photo images, which were saved as Photoshop format psd
files, in directory "./splits-orig".  The individual images were
adjusted for contrast and sharpened, and saved
as psd files, in "./splits-1".

50 photos, mostly about 2x3 in., were gang-scanned in color at about
500 ppi in groups of 10 or fewer; the resolution was changed to 300
ppi, giving individual photo image sizes about 3.5x5 in. and gang-scan
sizes 14x20 in.  These scans were saved as jpeg files.  The gang
scans were separated into individual photo images, converted to
grayscale, and stored as Macintosh byte-order tiff files.  19 of
these photos were scanned also in the gang scans 2:0[2-4].tif.
Because scans 2 were of higher quality, the 19 duplicated files
from scans 1 were not worked with further.

31 tiff files derived from the gang scans 1 were saved in psd format
in the directory "./splits-orig".  These individual images were
adjusted for contrast and sharpened, and saved as psd files in
"./splits-1".


The psd format image files of directory "./splits-1" were converted
to high-quality (8) jpg images, saved in "./splits-1-jpg".


The directories "./splits" and "./splits-jpg" are symlinked to the 
above two files.


A web photo gallery, under "./photogallery/", was created as described
in the top directory.
